Interview extract published in Inspired Eye Magazine #46
Where in the world are you located?
I live in Santiago, Chile
What inspired you to become a photographer?
In my house, there were many albums with family photographs, taken mostly by my mother. They showed incredible moments of the past. Most of those photos were able to show emotions that marked me forever.
How old are you and at what age did you start your journey as a photographer?
I am currently 47 years old. My story as a photographer has two parts: the first part began at age 10, when I would take my mother’s camera without her knowing to go with a friend of the family to take photos. Unfortunately, I hated the development process, since I did not like to wait, and I left it several years later. The second part was at age 29 when I discovered the digital age.
What purpose does photography serve for you?
It’s my way to express my creativity and to connect through simple moments of my daily life.
Do you have a preference for Black & White or Color? Please explain why.
I love the Black & White, but depending on the moment, I use color when I think that it is going to help me to transmit my idea.
Are you self taught, educated or a little bit of both?
Mostly self-taught, but as a child I learned the basics from a friend of my parents.
Do you exhibit your work in any form?
In general I upload my photos to my website (www.mariorasso.com), Flickr, Facebook, EyeEm, Instagram. In addition, I do exhibitions every 3 years.
Is there a question that you would like to answer that I haven’t asked?
Why is my name Mario Rasso?
Mario Rasso is my alter ego, I selected him to separate my personal life from my life as a photographer. It is the combination of two sides of my family:
Mario, on the side of my father, my great-grandfather, my grandfather, and my father, they are all named Mario.
From my mother's side, the last name of my Italian great-grandmother Rosa, was Rasso.
